Greenville, S.C. (October 1, 2013) – Kellyn Fitzgerald, a senior biology major at Bob Jones University, completed an internship with Santee Cooper’s Environmental Intern Program this summer.
Fitzgerald, a resident of Greenville, was one of twelve rising college juniors or seniors selected from applicants across the state to participate in the program. Interns are chosen each year by South Carolina legislators – as well as members of the South Carolina congressional delegation – and the Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina.
During the summer, interns are given the opportunity to rotate through three of nine departments – Analytical and Biological Services, Air Quality, Right of Way Management, Environmental Services, Investment Recovery, Vector Management, Old Santee Canal Park, Property Management, and Renewable Energy.
Fitzgerald was able to perform a variety of tasks including water quality testing, herbicide management, testing for West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis, tracking mosquito populations and identifying saplings that could potentially cause damage to transmission lines within a few years.
Following graduation from BJU in December, Fitzgerald plans to pursue graduate studies in wildlife biology.
