GREENVILLE, S.C. (February 9, 2017) — Dr. Carl Abrams, professor of history at Bob Jones University, recently published his third history book titled Old-Time Religion Embracing Modernist Culture through Lexington Books/Rowman and Littlefield. Abrams’ book focuses on the founding generation of American fundamentalism in the 1920s and 1930s and their interactions with modern culture.
Dr. Darren Dochuk, professor at the University of Notre Dame and one of the leading authorities on the history of evangelicalism praised Abrams’ book as “a timely, critical reassessment of Protestant fundamentalism’s founding generation.”
“With a judicious and accessible style, and a clear command of the archives and the latest scholarship, Abrams ably shows how this purportedly anti-intellectual class came to acknowledge the requisites of the modern American mind,” said Dochuk.
This study, the first to focus on the founding generation, also covers a broad spectrum of fundamentalists from the Northeast, Midwest, the South, and the West Coast, including some often overlooked by other historians.
Abrams holds a BA in history from BJU, an MA in history from North Carolina State University and a PhD in history from the University of Maryland, College Park. He and his wife, Linda, who is also on BJU’s social science faculty, have led nine summer mission teams to Africa.
