GREENVILLE, S.C. (September 8, 2014) – On the 13th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Bob Jones University will commemorate the 2,977 lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001 with a static display of American flags, the presentation of a 9/11 artifact and a special chapel service to honor our first responders.
“It’s important for all of us to remember what happened on 9/11,” said BJU President Steve Pettit. “Many lost their lives in heroic attempts to save others. We owe a debt of gratitude to those first responders who, day in and day out, never shrink from their duty to protect and serve others.”
Members of the BJU student body will set up a static display of American flags near the Wade Hampton Boulevard entrance to the campus. Each flag will represent one of the 2,977 people—from 115 different countries—that perished in the terrorist attacks in 2001. The students will begin assembling the display this evening and it will remain in place until Mon., Sept. 15.
During the chapel service on Thurs., Sept. 11 at 11 a.m., a piece of steel girder, originally from the North Tower at the World Trade Center in NYC, will be presented to the student body by the September 11th Families’ Association. This piece, 20” long x 8” wide and 2” thick, weighs approximately 40 lbs
Beginning at noon Thurs., Sept. 11 and continuing until Fri., Sept. 12 at 5 p.m., members of the public are welcome to view the 9/11 artifact on display in the lobby of Rodeheaver Auditorium, which is located near the center of campus.
