Greenville, S.C. (October 3, 2013) – In the University’s chapel service Sept. 30, Dr. Stephen Jones, president of Bob Jones University, awarded Lauren Ascher, a sophomore nursing major from Portsmouth, Va., the Second-Miler Award.

One of six President’s Club awards, the Second-Miler Award is given to a student who has shown extraordinary concern for a fellow student and given of himself to meet that student’s need.

Lauren’s nomination recounted that, “This past June, Lauren helped welcome and direct students and parents during Summer Orientation. During lunch on the first day, one of the incoming students, who knew no one at BJU, began suffering with heat stroke and had to return to her residence hall room. Lauren accompanied the student back to her room and stayed with her until she was comfortable.

Throughout the rest of that day and the next, Lauren went out of her way to ensure the student was comfortable and had everything she needed. Lauren’s kindness had such an impact on the incoming freshman that she requested to be in Lauren’s room. Lauren is the one who made that student’s Summer Orientation weekend profitable and gave her a special reason to enroll at BJU.”

Lauren’s ministry that weekend exemplifies what many students at BJU do regularly—going well beyond what is expected. This demonstration of Christ’s love had a significant impact in a peer’s life. As Jude 22 says, “And of some have compassion, making a difference.”

Students are nominated for President’s Club awards by faculty, staff and their peers, and a committee selects the final recipients from the nominations received. In addition to recognition in a President’s Club chapel, recipients have their photo displayed in the university Student Center and enjoy dinner with the president.
