Victoria Thurston, a senior from Broomfield, Colorado, is completing a nursing internship at Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital in Greenville, South Carolina, where she is gaining hands-on clinical experience while caring for patients with complex respiratory and pulmonary conditions.
During the internship, Thurston delivers supervised patient care to individuals facing illnesses such as pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, respiratory tract infections and cancer, as well as patients recovering from trauma, strokes and surgical procedures. Her responsibilities include monitoring vital signs, assisting with advanced treatments and daily care needs, supporting oxygen therapy and breathing interventions, administering medications under supervision and documenting patient progress. Thurston also works closely with nurses, physicians and other members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team to provide comprehensive patient care.
“This internship has challenged me to become a more knowledgeable, compassionate, and clinically competent nurse, but its value goes far beyond that,” Thurston said. “In an environment of suffering and oftentimes hopelessness, it has caused me to sharpen my own worldview in light of God’s truth and what He has laid before me as a calling and ministry.”
She added that the experience has played a significant role in shaping her professional goals. “With a long-term career goal of achieving my Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), this internship has helped to form a strong foundation by deepening my critical thinking, clinical judgment, and passion for advanced practice nursing that reflects the character and love of God.”
Through this internship, Thurston continues to develop both her clinical skills and her commitment to compassionate, Christ-centered care as she prepares for a future in advanced nursing practice.
