Even though classes were out, our BJU School of Education and Human Services (SOEHS) faculty stayed busy with educational opportunities. Check out just a few of them below.

BJU Press Exchange Conference: In July, several SOEHS faculty members, including Dr. Carruthers, Dr. Batdorf, Mrs. Miller and Dr. Hancox, were featured as professional development speakers at the BJU Press Exchange Conference. Over 530 educators from nearly 100 schools attended in person, while over 3400 were able to participate virtually. Participants came from all over the United States and 7 different countries for a great time of both sharing and learning.

Professional Development Trainings: Dr. Carruthers was able to participate in the in-service training for Gunnery Road Christian Academy in Fort Myers, FL. Together, they spent two days exploring the Art and Science of Teaching as part of BJU’s School of Education and Human Services EmpowerED program. Mrs. Christina Miller was also able to provide training at Westwood Christian School and Florida Christian School, both in the Miami area. If you think your school may be interested in our faculty helping your school with in-service training, please reach out to us at [email protected] for questions.

Strengthening Families Program: This summer, Dr. Hartman started working with the SAFY (Specialized Alternatives for Families and Youth) with their Strengthening Families program in Pickens, SC. SAFY is a nonprofit child and family services agency that partners with communities to provide foster care, adoption, behavioral health, and family support services. Their goal is to help at-risk children and families achieve stability, safety and well-being.

The Wilds: This summer, Dr. Buhr had the opportunity to preach at the Junior Boot Camp of The Wilds North Carolina. This involved presenting nine messages to about 280 children aged 9–12. This year, his messages focused on the Fruit of the Spirit. Making good use of plenty of object lessons, Dr. Buhr used God’s Word to show students the character traits that are produced in the lives of believers. Additionally, playing off of the fruit analogy, he used the acronym PEEL to help students learn how to study God’s Word for themselves.

Bug Biodiversity EduCamp: Dr. Batdorf and his wife were able to lead the Bug Biodiversity camp for 4th and 5th graders during Educamp Junior where students were introduced to the fascinating world of entomology. Each day had a different theme supported by appropriate crafts, games, fun videos, and even insect-themed snacks. Each student went home at the end of the week with his or her own net, collecting jar, and a collection of pinned and identified insects.
