Dr. Walt Brashier Home with the Lord

Walt Brashier

I received the news of the passing of Dr. T. Walter Brashier earlier this week. Little does the Bob Jones University family know the blessing he has been to BJU for many years.

My first encounter with Dr. Brashier was memorable. When I entered his office for the first time, I was greeted with this deep, rich southern preacher’s voice. His dress was immaculate. His demeanor was stately. From the very beginning, Dr. Brashier and I had an instant connection. We both served as Baptist evangelists for 30 years. We were both South Carolinians. His son and grandsons (Ted, Walt III and Wes) graduated from The Citadel. He told me his life story and the many miracles of grace he had experienced throughout his journey. Every conversation was fascinating. Perhaps what I appreciated the most was his personal interest in me and the role I had as the president of BJU.

We had a number of meals together. I visited his home on occasions. He spoke at BJU regarding business and ministry. I met with him many times in his office. Every time I left encouraged.

Walt was an incredibly generous man who used the talents God gave him to give God the glory. Throughout his life, he was a faithful servant of Jesus Christ who served his local church and people around the Upstate. Walt’s influence will continue to be felt across the Upstate because of his selfless philanthropic efforts at numerous Christian colleges.

The biggest surprise came when he told me he wanted to make a donation to BJU for scholarships for those who were studying for the ministry. Dr. Brashier was an incredibly generous man. He gave millions of dollars to many educational institutions within the state of South Carolina. He invested over a million dollars in the Dr. T. Walter Brashier and Christine Brashier Family Endowed Scholarship which gives scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students at BJU enrolled in a course of study leading to a degree in church-related vocation, especially preaching and missions. Those students who are being helped — and the countless souls that will come to Jesus Christ as a result of their ministry — are a testament to the devotion and determination of Dr. Brashier to tell the world the good news.

I was able to say goodbye to Dr. Brashier through a text sent to his grandson.

The entire BJU community mourns with the Brashier family for their earthly loss as we thank the Lord for the life and legacy of Dr. T. Walter Brashier. It is our hope that they will know and feel the love and comfort of God as they walk through these waters in the coming days and months.
