Bob Jones University, in conjunction with Greenville County Recreation Department, is hosting the annual Washington Center Challenge Day (WCCD) Friday, Oct. 3, from 9:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the Davis Field House.

“Reaching the 30th anniversary of Washington Center Challenge Day is truly special,” said Dr. Brian Carruthers, dean of the School of Education and Human Services. “Our students look forward to this day each year because it allows them to put their learning into practice while sharing joy and encouragement with the athletes. It has become one of BJU’s most cherished opportunities to serve and grow alongside our community.”

This Special Olympics event is the culmination of eight weeks called the Motor Activities Training Program (MATP). The MATP offers sports skills training for children and adults with low motor abilities. Approximately 80 students from Washington Center will come to the Davis Field House to perform a physical activity they have learned and practiced at school.

The opening ceremonies begin at 10 a.m. and will feature the Parade of Athletes. Jane Robelot, WYFF News 4 reporter, will serve as emcee.

There will also be an area with carnival games and prizes where BJU faculty and students will entertain and engage the athletes. Under the direction of Dr. Julie Hartman, students in Introduction to Human Services have designed several additional areas for athletes and their helpers to utilize during the event, including sensory rooms.

Over 200 BJU students including BJU Bruins student-athletes and members of the BJU Symphonic Wind Band will be participating in the event.
