GREENVILLE, S.C. (April 26, 2023) – At the end of this semester, senior Andrew Weiss will become the first BJU student to complete the Digital Audio Production certificate in addition to his BS in Music.

Paul Overly of the Division of Music, with the assistance of Sharyn Robertson, head of the Department of Cinematic Arts; David Lurtey, Journalism and Mass Communication; and Kenon Renfrow, Division of Music, proposed a certificate that drew from classes that were part of several different academic programs.

The close collaboration across departments and divisions allowed the development of something very helpful for the students. Division chairs Mary Mendoza (Communication) and Michael Moore (Music) gave their enthusiastic support to make the certificate a reality.

The Digital Audio Production certificate consists of four classes (10 hours): Introduction to Music Technology and Studio Production Techniques from the Division of Music, Editing and Sound for Digital Media from the department of Cinematic Arts, and Intro to Media Production from the department of Journalism and Mass Communication. Each class is project based and features hands-on production experience. The students develop competence in industry standard software such as Adobe Audition, Logic and Pro Tools. While these classes all have prerequisites, the prerequisites are waived for a student wishing to complete this certificate.

In addition to his pursuit of the Digital Audio Production certificate, Andrew has also leveraged several related internship opportunities. In the summer of 2022, he served as an audio production intern at OneWay Ministries based in Aurora, Illinois. In the fall of 2022 as part of his Entrepreneurial Musician class, he served as an intern at Brett Ensley Studios in Greer, South Carolina, gaining important recording studio experience. He also served as David Lurtey’s assistant on various audio engineering projects in the JMC department and around campus.

Andrew’s hard work has resulted in employment success. During spring break, he learned that he has been hired as an audio production assistant at Crossway Publishers in Wheaton, Illinois. He will start 10 days after graduation.
