Greenville, S.C. (October 31, 2013) – In their inaugural season as members of South Carolina Association of Christian Schools (SCACS) Athletics League, the Bob Jones Academy Lions won the state championships in men’s soccer and women’s volleyball at the SCACS State Soccer and Volleyball Tournament held in Conway, S.C., Oct. 25-26.

The varsity men’s soccer team played Calvary Christian School of Myrtle Beach in the semifinal game.  An outstanding free kick goal of 35+ yards by BJA senior Garrett Martin just prior to the end of the first half put the Lions on the board, and they added three more goals in the second half for a convincing win in the semifinal match.

The BJA women played Northside Christian School of Charleston in the varsity volleyball semifinals.  The Lions won the semifinal match which prepared them for the championship on Saturday.

Proceeding to the championship, the BJA men’s soccer team played Hampton Park Christian School of Greenville in the championship soccer game. These teams played each other in the regular season and in the regional playoffs. The Lions, coached by Don Ward, Jr., opened the championship match with intensity and focus that enabled them to dictate much of the offensive action.  There were a number of good offensive opportunities that resulted in three goals for the Lions as they capped the season with an 18 – 0 record and the SCACS State Soccer Tournament Championship win.  BJA students Garrett Martin of Simpsonville, Seth Brown of Fletcher, N.C., Brady Taylor of Greenville, and Christian Walker of Greenville were selected as members of the All-Tournament Team.

The BJA varsity volleyball team, coached by Rachel Asire and Jenny Thornton, faced Emmanuel Christian School of Hartsville for the championship. The Lions entered the championship match with a determination that had been developed during a great regular season and came away with the championship win of the SCACS State Volleyball Tournament.  The women finished with a 13-1 record for the season.  BJA students Kirstin Christmas of Easley and Amanda Leatherwood of Greer were selected as members of the All-Tournament Team.
