GREENVILLE, S.C. (March 16, 2020) – The Bob Jones University Bruins intercollegiate computer programming teams placed second and third in the small school division at the annual Spring Programming Competition held Saturday, Feb. 29, at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia.
Juniors Erick Ross (Greenville, South Carolina), Caedmon Evans (Taylors, South Carolina) and sophomore Melchisedek Dulcio (Fort Pierce, Florida) comprised the small school division second-place team. The other BJU team, seniors Zach Hayes (Grovetown, Georgia), Ryan Longacre (Hallstead, Pennsylvania) and junior Elias Watson (Clearwater, Florida) placed third.
Mercer University has hosted the five-hour competition for 15 years. Formatted after the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Regionals competition, teams consist of three individuals that compete in four divisions. Scoring is based on the number of problems answered correctly.
“The Mercer contest is a highlight of our spring schedule for our programming teams,” said Dr. Jim Knisely, head of BJU’s Department of Computer Science. “It and other competitions like it throughout the year provide great opportunities for mentoring our students.”
Bob Jones University, Clemson University, Georgia Tech, Mercer University, Lander University, the University of North Georgia, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Georgia College, Spelman College, and the University of Central Florida entered a combined 21 teams in the competition.
BJU continues its success in the competition, having taken first place in eight of the past nine years as well as second and third places on multiple occasions.
