GREENVILLE, S.C. (October 29, 2015) – Bob Jones University kicks off its 2015-2016 Concert, Opera and Drama Series with the BJU Symphonic Wind Band on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 8 p.m. in the Founder’s Memorial Amphitorium on the BJU campus.
Under the direction of Dr. Dan Turner, the Symphonic Wind Band presents a program featuring the exciting concerto “Colors” as well as other virtuoso works for the trombone. Also included are several outstanding pieces for wind ensembles, including “Lincolnshire Posy,” a six-movement symphony of British ballads and folk songs by Percy Grainger.
“Our concert, “Trombonanza,” celebrates one of the most heroic instruments of the orchestra and wind band—the trombone. Often given the role of speaking in the musical voice of judgement or battle, the trombone also has a beautiful, winsome, and sensitive side to it as well,” said Dr. Turner, conductor of BJU’s Symphonic Wind Band. “We are honored to have Matthew Vaughn, associate principal trombone of the Philadelphia Orchestra, display these sides of the instrument in “Colors,” a fantastic concerto by Belgian composer Bert Appermont.”
In addition, the performance features a combined trombone choir of BJU alumni, students and Greenville-area professionals in honor of former BJU trombone professor Dr. Frank Garlock, who brought the trombone choir medium to BJU from the Eastman School of Music in 1963.
