GREENVILLE, S.C. (July 18, 2018) – Richard Wang, a junior biology major at Bob Jones University, participates this summer in research at the JC Self Research Institute of the Greenwood Genetic Center located in Greenwood, South Carolina.
Wang, a resident of Luoyang, China, is primarily focused on performing metabolic tests using BioLog Phenotype MicroArrays analyzing cell lines from patients with autism and other genetic disorders and genetic screening of the genes related to Phelan-McDermid syndrome. The tests are performed utilizing PCR and Sanger sequencing. The aim of this study is to establish genotype-phenotype correlation, considering the variations in clinical presentation and genetic background.
“This internship means a lot to me since it allows me to have experience in research and perform hands-on bench work. This will help guide me as I choose between research and practicing medicine,” says Wang. “Dr. Luigi Boccuto is an excellent mentor who not only tells me what needs to be done, but also explains to me the purpose and mechanism. I am blessed to be able to learn under him.”
