GREENVILLE, S.C. (October 7, 2014) – The South Carolina Council for the Social Studies (SCCSS) recently honored Loyd Henderson, Social Studies department chair at Travelers Rest High School (TRHS), with the Palmetto Teachers of Excellence Award for Social Studies.

Henderson, a 2002 graduate of Bob Jones University, received the award during the 2014 SCCSS Conference Oct. 4 in Columbia. He was one of approximately 35 Social Studies teachers from across South Carolina honored. A resident of Taylors, Henderson was nominated for the award by the Greenville County School District.

According to the Greenville County School District, teachers are selected based on their knowledge of content, passion for quality, engaging instruction, willingness to share and collaborate with their colleagues, and their overall effectiveness in the classroom.

Henderson teaches all levels of classes from freshman geography to IB History of the Americas, as well as various electives. He has been previously recognized as a TRHS Teacher of the Year and has devoted countless hours to non-classroom activities including acting in and set design for multiple school plays and musical productions, sponsoring award winning student videos and serving as a Youth in Government sponsor.
