Collegian Staff Wins SCPA Awards

GREENVILLE, S.C. (April 24, 2017) — Staff members for Bob Jones University’s student newspaper, The Collegian, were recognized with multiple awards by the South Carolina Press Association (SCPA) at the Collegiate Annual News Contest held on Friday, April 21, at the Francis Marion University Performing Arts Center in Florence, South Carolina. Both individual staff members and The Collegian staff in its entirety were honored.

“We’re proud of our staff members and their hard work during this academic year,” said Betty Solomon, a journalism and mass communication professor at BJU and faculty adviser for The Collegian. “They not only provided a service to their peers by keeping them informed about their campus, but these students also gained valuable skills that will benefit them personally and professionally for years to come.”

The BJU students receiving individual SCPA awards include:

Abigail Sivyer (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) – First place, Arts and Entertainment Story

Amy Sheeter (Sabina, Ohio) – First place, Specialty Page Design

Rebecca Snyder (Greenville, South Carolina) – First place, Specialty Page Design; second place, Sports Photograph; second place, Photo Series/Photo Story

Stephen Dysert (Madrid, Spain) – First place, Photograph

Ian Nichols (Greenville, South Carolina) – First place, Photo Series/Photo Story; third place, Sports Photograph

Jordan Harbin (Greer, South Carolina) – First and third place, Cartoon/Illustration

Jacob Clipperton (Greenville, South Carolina) – Second place, Specialty Page Design; third place, Page One Design

Elisa Crawley (Boston, Massachusetts) – Third place, Column Writing

In addition, The Collegian staff won third place in the General Excellence category.

The SCPA Collegiate News Contest recognizes the best in South Carolina collegiate journalism. Collegiate staff members compete against other colleges and universities in 26 different contests, including writing, design, photography and illustration.
