Bruce Cox Named Director of Bands

Bruce Cox directs Symphonic Wind Band

GREENVILLE, S.C. (April 11, 2019) – The Bob Jones University Division of Music announced today that Dr. Bruce Cox will assume the role of director of bands and conductor of the Symphonic Wind Band beginning in the 2019–2020 academic year.

“Dr. Cox brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this important artistic and administrative leadership role,” said Dr. Michael Moore, chair of the Division of Music. “On the podium and in the studio, he has a consistent track record of skillfully guiding student musicians to achieve their best for God’s glory.”

Cox earned a BS in music education from Bob Jones University. He went on to earn an MS in music education from the University of Illinois and a DMA in trumpet performance and pedagogy from the University of Southern Mississippi.

From 1984 through 1990, Cox directed the bands of Bob Jones Academy. Since 1997, he has served as assistant director of bands and conductor of the University Concert Band at BJU. He will continue to teach trumpet, brass pedagogy and literature, and conducting as a professor in the Division of Music.

Dr. Dan Turner, who is retiring as director of bands at the end of this academic year, will pass the baton to Dr. Cox in this year’s final Symphonic Wind Band concert 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, in Stratton Hall. The concert is free and open to the public.
