GREENVILLE, S.C. (October 11, 2021) – Dr. Scott Buhr joined the Bob Jones University faculty this fall as an assistant professor in the Division of Educational, Child and Family Studies in the School of Education and Human Services.
“Scott is transitioning into the role of division chair for teacher education this year while working alongside Dr. Sonia Johnson as co-chair. He will be assuming the role as division chair next year,” said Dr. Brian Carruthers, dean of the School of Education and Human Services. “He brings excitement and energy to the teacher education division as we look to strengthen traditional education programs.”
Buhr earned both a BS in composite science education and an MS in educational leadership from BJU. In 2020, he completed an EdD in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis in technology from the University of South Carolina.
From 2013 – 2018, Buhr taught a variety of physics courses along with other physical science courses at Hillcrest High School in Simpsonville, S.C. He also participated in the Digital Leadership Corps, a 1:1 technology integration team and co-wrote the physics curriculum for Greenville County Public Schools.
Outside of the classroom, Buhr served as an instructional designer and auditor at ZF Transmissions, creating eLearning line audit training modules for line supervisors. He worked as an AP Physics 1 reader for The College Board scoring student essays.
In 2020, Buhr became an adjunct professor for Bob Jones University’s School for Continuing, Online and Professional Education (SCOPE) and Veritas Baptist College. In this role, he designed undergraduate and graduate level online courses and worked closely with faculty to align courses with the respective institutional missions.
His professional achievements include breaking a Guinness World Record, Highest Launch from a Galilean Cannon, and being named the Hillcrest High School Teacher of the Year (2017-2018). He is an official adjudicator with Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision competition. Buhr is currently one of five finalists from the state of South Carolina for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, the nation’s highest honor for STEM educators.
This academic year, he will be teaching “Foundations in Educational Technology” and serve as co-chair of the Division of Teacher Education.
“I am excited to partner with the BJU faculty as we prepare students to be lifelong learners and followers of Jesus Christ,” said Buhr. “I hope to provide students with an environment that allows them to uncover their identity in Christ and develop the skills to walk, full of confidence, into a classroom and provide their students with an excellent education.”
Buhr and his wife, Kate, have two sons. They attend Beth Haven Baptist Church. He has served as both music and youth director at the church.
