GREENVILLE, S.C. (September 1, 2017) – Several students recently participated in the 2017 United Kingdom Study Abroad Experience hosted by Bob Jones University.

Students toured cities throughout England, Scotland, and Wales including London, Bath, Oxford, Stratford-upon-Avon, York, Keswick, Edinburgh, and Inverness. Discussions throughout the tour focused on Christian storytellers C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien.

The students attended a Shakespearean play at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon, participating in discussions of religious themes within Shakespearean literature and a tour of the Globe Theatre. The trip also included a tour of Stonehenge; a tour of the Kilns, home of C.S. Lewis, in Oxford; a lecture from leading C.S. Lewis scholar, Michael Ward; and a lecture and tour of Oxford University by BJU alumnus, Shakespearean scholar, and Oxford University student, Micah Coston.

“During this trip, the island of Great Britain was our classroom,” says Dr. Paul Radford, head of the Department of Communication Studies at BJU and tour host. “Discussions came alive as we explored sites significant to the course material. Traveling internationally as a community of students produced settings for immersive learning.”

Trip participants included Elise Farley (junior communication major), Amanda Benwire (sophomore interior architecture and design major), Karen Balint (junior communication major), Jamie Gelzleichter (junior cinema production major), Bailey Dabbs (junior communication major), Nathan Young (graduate student pursuing a Masters of Arts degree in communication studies), Julie Mission (graduate student pursuing a Masters of Arts degree in communications studies), Aubrey Elliott (graduate student pursuing a Masters of Music degree), Joshua Lobach (graduate student pursuing a Masters of Divinity degree), Stephen Broadwater (2017 graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in cinema production), Jesse Mallory (2017 graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting), Rebekah Cobb (2008 graduate with a Masters of Science degree in personnel services), Rachel Cobb (2008 graduate with a Masters of Arts degree in interpretative speech), and Katie Pletcher (2014 graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in Christian ministries and current BJU staff member).
