GREENVILLE, S.C. (April 15, 2024) – Several Bob Jones University students participated as members of the Bob Jones University delegation in the spring session of the South Carolina Student Legislature (SCSL) held April 9-11, 2025, in Conway, S.C.
Preparation for SCSL helps students learn the intricacies of representative government and provides an opportunity for them to hone their skills by debating their peers on a host of issues.
Founded in 1956 by Dr. Doug Carlisle, the organization is run entirely by students. Former participants include current South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster.
This session, Bob Jones University, Charleston Southern University, Clemson University, Coastal Carolina University, Francis Marion University, Presbyterian College and the University of South Carolina fielded delegations.
The BJU delegation was chaired by sophomore Josiah Gearhart of Greenville and comprised of senior Camden Gearhart from Greenville; junior Hope Combest from Clarkston, Michigan; freshman Avery Kendall from Greenville; freshman C.J. Spare from Greer; freshman J.J. Mayes from Greer; and freshman Caleb Rose from Flint, Michigan.
Former Representative Wendy Nanney (’87) served as delegation sponsor.
“Being our new delegation chair has brought its challenges, but overall, it has been a rewarding experience. We were able to pass 3 of the 4 bills that we presented and our new delegates grew in their ability to speak both publicly and persuasively, which is one of our main goals for the spring session,” said Josiah Gearheart, BJU delegation chair. “More importantly, we were able to establish and grow our relationships with members from other delegations, which I believe is the most critical and rewarding aspect of SCSL.”
