GREENVILLE, S.C. (May 5, 2015) – The Bob Jones University (BJU) Vintage staff today announced the dedication of the 2015 yearbook to Dr. Grace Hargis, who has served as a BJU professor for 53 years.

Through her decades of service, Hargis taught a number of courses including Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL), Cultures in Contact, Field Methods in Linguistics, ESL English and Field Methods and Literacy. Each of these classes conveyed her passion for both language and missions.

One of Dr. Hargis’ greatest ongoing accomplishments is perhaps the founding of BJU’s Missionary Linguistics Program in 1974, which she directs and teaches in every other summer. Through this program, Hargis has helped many missionaries understand the basis of the language in the places they plan to minister.

In addition to her work with the linguistics program, Hargis desires to serve missionary endeavors directly during the summers and has helped missionaries with language and taught nationals in Africa, Asia and Central America.

BJU Provost emeritus Dr. Phil Smith said, “Bible translation work is alive and doing well in many countries because Grace was patient and allowed her talents to be used when the timing was right here at the University.”

Hargis earned a BA in Bible in 1960 from BJU.  She also earned a MA in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1961 and a PhD in Linguistics from Indiana University at Bloomington in 1966. She and her husband, Jim, are active members of Faith Baptist Church in Taylors.

Dr. Hargis will continue as a member of BJU’s faculty in the division of Modern Language and Literature.
